Don Glut has worked as a screenwriter for cartoons including Spider-Man, G.I. Joe, X-Men, Transformers and many more. He created some of the characters and much of the back story for the Masters of the Universe toy line, which later served as the basis for the cartoon. He got a letter published in Fantastic Four #24 (cover date – March 1964) at the age of 20.

George R.R. Martin has been writing science fiction, horror and fantasy novels for decades. He’s the main force behind the long-running Wild Cards series and, most recently, HBO has created an ongoing television series entitled Game of Thrones that is based on his A Song of Ice and Fire series. He got a letter published in Fantastic Four #20 (cover date – November 1963) at the age of 16.

Mark Gruenwald was Marvel’s keeper of continuity in the 1980s. He played an important role in the development of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. As a writer, he’s best known for the original Squadron Supreme series and the 60-issue Quasar series. Stephen Colbert is now in posession of Gruenwald’s Captain America shield and, when he died, Gruenwald’s ashes were mixed into the ink used in the first printing of the Squadron TPB. He got a letter published in Fantastic Four #20 (cover date – November 1963) at the age of 11.

Steve Gerber was an important addition to the comics community. Not only did he create Howard the Duck (and many other characers including Omega the Unknown and Sludge) but he was an early champion for creator’s rights – they eventually revolutionized the industry. He got a letter published in Fantastic Four #19 (cover date – October 1963).

In the early 1990s, Evan Skolnick was an editor at Marvel who presided over books including Ghost Rider 2099, Alf and the video game-inspired Double Dragon. A weird mix of titles, eh? He was also a colorist who worked on licensed titles such as Bill & Ted, Kid ‘n Play, Ren & Stimpy, etc. Others may remember him as the writer for William Shatner’s Tekworld or the later issues of New Warriors. Quite a talented guy! He and fellow colorist, Brad K. Joyce, got a letter published in Mighty Mouse#10 (cover date – July 1991).

When New York’s super-heroes and villains destroy the city during their battles, Damage Control cleans up the mess. But, even these guys couldn’t stop Mighty Mouse’s book from being canceled. As a marketing ploy, they got a letter published in Mighty Mouse#10 (cover date – July 1991). When this was published, their third series was already on its second issue.

Famous Fanmail #64 Bill and Ted

You may not be surprised to learn that most people in the comic business grew up reading comic books. However, you might be interested in knowing what they were reading. Here’s a look at “Famous Fanmail”!

B.S. Preston, Esquire and T. “T.” Logan have had some Excellent and Bogus Adventures. You might know them better from their 1989 film as Bill and Ted. Interestingly enough, as a marketing ploy, they got a letter published in Mighty Mouse#10 (cover date – July 1991). Their series, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Comic Book, debuted in December, later that year. Interestingly enough, rumor has it that the original writer has completed the script to a third Bill and Ted film as of April 2011.

Keen observers will notice that our time-traveling pals, Bill and Ted, have dated this letter August of 1992 even though it was published in July of 1991.
